Concealed carry enters second year in the Southland – Daily Southtown

Hayes attributed the popularity of concealed carry in suburbia to perceptions of safety: He said the majority of small-town residents he has spoken to over the years tend to be far more fearful of crime than people living in the city.

“In speaking with small town residents, I’ve had to invest a lot of time educating the public about this fear that they feel, when often the fear is unfounded,” Hayes said, adding that some people in the suburbs may base their fears on pop culture and TV shows dramatizing dangerous crimes.

He said in his professional and personal experience, city dwellers seem less affected by that notion

But Hayes, who previously opposed the law, also said he noticed suburbanites who now have concealed carry licenses seem to be less fearful of crime and more confident in community safety.
