Tactical Definitions & Ideas A – I

Below you will find an index of commonly used definitions. As we mentioned previously, you shouldn’t feel pressured to memorize them immediately; rather, come back to them often when you come across an unfamiliar term while you are reading through this manual.

Ability, Opportunity, Jeopardy

Generally speaking, there are three elements that must be present to justify lethal force are Ability, Opportunity, and Jeopardy.

In some states, you must clearly be able to prove that there was little or no reassemble hope of a safe escape or retreat, or by doing so you would have jeopardized the lives and safety of others.

Ability – Your adversary must clearly demonstrate that he has the ability to kill or cause serious bodily injury, whether that be through the use of weapons, disparity of numbers, size or demonstrated skills such as martial arts (which you must be aware of beforehand).

That is, if your adversary was armed, and not showing that he was armed (concealed carry), or was a black belt in some killer martial art form, you cannot learn of this fact after the fight and use that as part of your defense in a court of law.

Opportunity – Your adversary must clearly have the opportunity to kill or cause serious bodily injury immediately. That is, he must be within range without intervening objects or circumstances, which would prevent him from carrying out an immediate attack whereby he could kill or cause serious bodily injury.

What is the Strategy for Winning a Gunfight?

The strategy for winning a defensive gunfight is converting disadvantage to advantage.

Let’s clarify what we mean by defensive combative firearms training.

Because you are not the one instigating the confrontation, you will initially be at a disadvantage and in a reactionary and defensive state because you are behind in what John Boyd called the decision making process or the “OODA Loop”.

Conversely, because your adversary is selecting the time, palace, conditions, and weaponry for the confrontation – he will initially start with the initiative as the causal factor in your situation because he has already completed may OODA Loops before you ever even knew of him or his intent.

While starting in a reactive state is an initial disadvantage; proper training can teach you how to convert this initial reactive and disadvantageous situation to your advantage and to the disadvantage of your adversary.

Solid training programs can teach you how to react in a manner that will cause your adversary to react to your actions, and exploiting this initial success can allow you to then wrestle the initiative away from your adversary and then keep him in a reactive state so you can end the with a more favorable outcome for yourself.

The key here is for you to become the causal factor to your adversaries plan for you, and thereby placing him in a disadvantageous reactive state, and the more solid your skills are, the easier it will be for you.

Obviously, converting the initial disadvantage to advantage is key, and this key does have a price, and that price is effort in training.

Weed, guns and catfish: 2017 brings new laws, big changes

Because, you know, those “evil features” like the bullet-buttons that are so popular with hooligans.

On the West Coast, gun owners in California will face new restrictions after Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law banning the purchase of semiautomatic rifles with so-called “evil features…. [that] include pistol grips, flash hiders and bullet-buttons that make it easier to remove and replace (already modified) ammunition magazines. The Los Angeles Times reported an increase in gun purchases in the lead-up to the Jan. 1 implementation.

What is Tactics?

“There is only one principle of war and that’s this. Hit the other fellow, as quick as you can, and as hard as you can, where it hurts him the most, when he ain’t looking.” – Field marshal William Joseph “Bill” Slim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Slim,_1st_ Viscount_Slim)

What is tactics and why should I care?

In short, tactics is “the art and science of winning engagements and battles. It includes the use of firepower and maneuver, the integration of different arms, and the immediate exploitation of success to defeat the enemy… the product of judgment and creativity…” FMFM 1

I will flesh out the above paragraph shortly, but so as not to string you along, and answer the question about why you should care about the study of tactics I can think of a few compelling reasons.

Grandma Got Run Over by Obama: SSA Finalizes New Gun Rule

Because you know… all the crimes committed by seniors.

For example, the SSA did not attempt to answer most of the legal questions raised about its authority, instead deferring to an overbroad and problematic ATF regulation defining who counts under the federal Gun Control Act as a “mental defective” and to Department of Justice guidance on reporting. The SSA did not explain why, some two decades after the federal background check system came online, it was reversing its earlier determination about its reporting responsibilities and only now asserting a mandate to do so.

Shocker… Criminal owns illegal guns.

He’d been convicted in 2010 of Social Security fraud and got six months in prison. An investigation revealed Keaton had been voting under his own name and those of at least two other men, including his dead son. He’d also collected Social Security under the name of his brother Jerome Keaton, who died in 1989.

Should You Buy A Gun?

CRITICAL ISSUES – Fearar is driving first time gun buyers. And fear is their overriding emotion after purchasing a gun. Without proper training, many new gun owners unnecessarily fear their weapon as much as the threats they’re hoping to defending against. Specifically, new gun owners wonder about both safety and effectiveness. Can they store, carry and operate the gun safely? Most importantly, can they pull the trigger when needed? For these new gun owners, a gun represents the solution to a problem. They’re not buying the gun to add to their collection or for recreational or competitive shooting. They’re buying the gun because they’re concerned. With proper training, the initial feeling of fear can be converted to confidence leading to a new gun owner capable of safely and effectively defending life and property. The key to addressing these critical issues is training…

Coming After Your (replica) Guns?

Toy gun

Of the 86 fatal shootings involving imitation firearms since 2015, the most common theme was mental illness: 38 of those killed had a history of it, according to their families and police reports. Fourteen of the calls were domestic disturbances. Ten others began as robberies. The remaining circumstances range from patrolling neighborhoods to serving arrest warrants to making traffic stops.

Are more laws needed to make a fake gun look fake to protect the person wielding it inappropriately?

Is the problem fake guns that look too real (whatever that means), or could other factors be at play?

Since people under a life or death situation (such as those described in the article) naturally achieve a sympathetic nervous system or (SNS) response which includes the loss of color vision; what modifications will be demanded when simply coloring guns differently doesn’t fix the problem?

It seems to me that the real problem is that some people choose to intimidate, coerce, or otherwise threaten other innocent people, and then other people react with appropriate levels of counterviolence when faced with someone acting in a manner that suggests that they or others are in immediate jeopardy of loss of life and limb.

As my friends in law enforcement say “You do stupid thing, you win stupid prizes.”

String of shootings on party buses exposes gray area in regulations in Chicago?

And near the bottom of the article, the real issue comes out.

I am skeptical that any licensed carriers committed any of the shootings, and if they did, they need to be made an example of.

No need for further regulations, simply enforce violations of the NAP will take care of it.

There are already laws on the books for this kind of behavior, no need to place more regulations on any industry.

Pearson said he didn’t think a change in the law would make any difference because it’s unclear whether people shooting others on party buses are licensed concealed carry owners.

Cities push to destroy seized guns — even in states where it’s prohibited

Is the argument being made that an “illegally owned” object should be destroyed by the state once discovered?

If so, what other inanimate illegally owned objects does the state already destroy and what illegally owned objects does it sell?

Is there some kind of magic that comes from the destruction of illegally owned objects that helps to “prevent more violence”?

Do poor people not have the same right to self-defense as the rich?

Some cities around the country would like to destroy them (illigally owned firearms) but can’t, because more than a dozen states have passed laws forcing city governments to put the guns up for auction.

Cleveland man charged in deadly accidental shooting at dinner party ‘extremely sorry,’ attorney says

This is a tragic, although not an unexpected result of what can happen when universal safety rules are ignored and common sense is not exercised.

The Ohio Concealed Carry  Laws and Application .pdf, published by the Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine states: “The law requires certified training in the following matters: The ability to name, explain, and demonstrate the rules for safe handling of a handgun…”

This again proves that training (regardless of the quality) has little value if it doesn’t change your behavior.

It’s important to note that there are hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of responsible gun owners and carriers, may of whom never receive any formal training, who act responsibly and would never consider allowing their friends to clown around with their weapons.

Leannais, who has never been convicted of a felony, agreed to prosecutors’ request that he give up any guns he still has and surrender his concealed carry license as part of the conditions of his bond. He was also ordered to have no contact with any witnesses to the shooting.

Review – JDM Holsters

img_1506-2

JDM custom Kydex holster

JDM Holsters is a custom manufacturer based in the Quad Cities providing custom Kydex solutions for whatever your needs may be – whether a gun or a knife, Joe has you covered.

I was first introduced to Joe by my good friend Erik Mattley of Davenport Guns when we were looking for holsters designed to work with the Viridian XTL series tactical light for our Handgun Provisioning Package.

The package provides shooters with a Glock 19, spare magazines, Viridian XTL, holster, Blackhawk magazine pouch, 50 rounds of ammunition, a membership into the Defense Academy, and most importantly – the training to tie it all together via our Handgun Basics course – all for well under $1,000.00.

While we are fans of the Viridian XTL because of its technology that allows the shooter to select either a constant on or strobe function and can activate itself on the draw if the shooter chooses to do so, we were not pleased with the narrow selection of holsters available for this developing technology.

While there can be no doubt that other light manufacturers will need to adapt this instant on technology (Viridian calls it ECR: Enhanced Combat Readiness/Instant On) or lose market share, right now there just aren’t that many manufacturers who are building holsters for this nascent technology.

I had called several manufacturers who simply couldn’t accommodate our needs, and had just about given up hope.

Enter Joe.

Joe was kind enough to come into the shop and discuss our needs, show us samples of his work, and focus his considerable talents on coming up with a solution for us.

Long story short – I was so impressed with Joe, his holsters, and his dedication to his product that I asked him to build one for me (photo at the top), and I have been wearing it now for almost 6-months.

What do I think of Joe’s work now that I own one of his creations?

I love my JDM holster. It’s rock solid, works they way it should, is a good looking holster, and it’s finished with obvious attention to details. Joe’s craftsmanship is evident in his product, and his commitment to his customers is as commendable as it is rare.

If you’re reading this Joe – you have my respect brother, you build a quality holster and I am glad that I know you.

With more colors, designs, and variations than you can shake a stick at, Joe’s holsters are worth every penny (and then some), the QCA is lucky to have him, and I wish him the best of success in his business.

If you are looking for a custom solution for your needs, reach out to Joe on his Facebook page, or give him a call at 563.370.1274. You won’t regret it.

California’s bullet button ban sparks historic surge in long gun checks

“Bullet buttons” only needed in fascist states where citizens are considered chattel… so far.

Oh crazy Killifornia, when will you learn?

Already the market finds a new way for the voting mundanes to try and defend themselves through bureaucratic red tape, although it requires a partial takedown (opening of) the receiver to reload. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XedaFH6pC1o

Gun control advocates argue closing the bullet button loophole in California’s assault weapons ban could prevent future mass casualties.

Benefits of Journaling?

Innovation through personal insight is one of the many reasons we encourage recording all of your practice via a Training Log and Journal pages.

As the article further explains, remixing and repurposing proven principles and making the knowledge all your own has benefits that continue on for a lifetime.

This seems to support the spirit of Kirby Ferguson’s argument that Everything is a Remix. Copy, transform, and combine = the creativity triad.

It’s no wonder simple applications like Todoist that include journaling features are becoming so popular.Never before have so many people had so much easy access to quickly facilitate their own self-improvement.

Never before have so many people had so much easy access to quickly achieve their own goals and facilitating the change they want to see in their lives.

One effective way researchers have found to reinforce learning is through reflective writing. It turns out that regular journaling can be used to train our attention and strengthen neural pathways.  As neurologist and teacher Judy Willis explains: The practice of writing can enhance the brain’s intake, processing, retaining, and retrieving of information… it promotes the brain’s attentive focus … boosts long-term memory, illuminates patterns, gives the brain time for reflection, and when well-guided, is a source of conceptual development and stimulus of the brain’s highest cognition.

Reflective writing has also been shown to improve decision making and critical thinking in a number of medical professions, including physical therapy and nursing.

Gun Control & Statistics: Gun Owners Safer than Unarmed Americans

David French with some astute observations about hoplophobes.

Yes, yes there is something you can do. You can arm yourself… You don’t have to rely on your laptop or a pair of scissors to save your life and the lives of those around you. You can walk into a restaurant, a mall, or any other place where firearms are permitted with confidence, not as a vigilante, but as an armed citizen capable of defending yourself and others.

Finnland: Local man ignores laws and kills town official and two journalists.

It’s a common enough story that (again) shows that people who want to murder will always find a way, regardless of the laws.

A local man with a criminal record of violent offenses drove into Imatra (Finnland), around midnight on Saturday and took an illegally obtained hunting rifle from the trunk of his car, ignored the laws against murder, fired four or five shots (probably violating at least a city ordinance) into the presumably unarmed yet, law abiding, victims.

Seemingly satisfied with his work the 23-year-old stopped at that point and apparently waited for capture by the police.

The article mentions that Finnland is seeking an exemption from the European Union’s draconian gun laws based on “defensive needs.” Does this mean that the people of Finnland realize that a distributed threat is best addressed with distributed security?

Kind of sounds like it.

Finland shares an 833-mile (1,340 km) border with Russia and has sought exceptions from proposed European Union restrictions on firearms, citing defense needs.

A fast police response takes second place and always will

Depending on where you live sometimes police response is relatively fast, but as this attack shows, any delay still leaves dead and wounded.

When you have only seconds to respond and the police are only minutes or less away you’re still going to get hurt or die if you can’t protect yourself right now.

I hate to be pedantic in pointing out what many of us see as the obvious, but it’s all about Boyd’s OODA Loop.

The simple fact is that until you are able to affect change in the situation and stop the attack or otherwise thwart the attack yourself – you will remain at risk.

Attacks like these are decentralized/distributed problems which can not, at the time, be solved by centralizing the only appropriate solution (decisive violence) into the hands of others. Attempting to do so will only expand your OODA Loop and leave you vulnerable.

Understand – anything that delays your ability to instantly respond will leave you and other innocents critically vulnerable.

While not doing violence yourself may make you feel good now avoidance will only expand your OODA Loop and leave you critically vulnerable when you need to act correctly during the worst time of your life.

If being critically vulnerable is your thing that’s fine, but don’t fool yourself into thinking you can survive because some hired gun will have your back.

It’s a mistake to think that someone else can protect you, there simply aren’t enough paid good guys to do that. Even with 40 cops on your block, it can still happen, and even if you had your own PSD team there are no guarantees.

The time to respond correctly is shorter than most people realize (usually under 5 seconds) therefore, the ability to appropriately respond must be instantly available if you want to end the lethal attack with the fewest number of injuries or death.

This is reality and society will be much better off once people learn to deal with it.

Like it or not, the real “first” responder must be the individual(s) on the scene, because until they are, more lives will be lost.

If you’re hoping for a cop (or anyone else) to save you your going to have a bad day, and it just may be the final one as well.

“Our officer was on the scene in less than a minute, and he ended the situation in less than a minute. He engaged the suspect, and he eliminated the threat. The suspect is DOA.”
